20 Questions With...Craig Beck
 


"Cows rule in India"

Craig Beck, VHS '89, is an Electrical Engineer who spends a good portion of his life in exotic parts of the world on an oil rig. He is currently working off the coast of India.

T - How did you get into this line of work?

Well, to start, I did go to college after moving to the states, to pursue my dream of playing baseball. I made it to college and got hurt the first year. So that didn't work out. Then I went to school for electrical/electronics work. I wanted more money and more time off so I called a friend in the oilfield. Three days later, I was working in the Gulf of Mexico. I work for one of the largest oilfield companies in the world. My job has taken me around the world, right now I am on the east coast of India, and will work here for the next 3 years, with a 28 day on and 28 day off rotation. Anyone interested in the oilfield, is more than welcome to contact me anytime.

  1. Do cows have free reign to roam wherever they want in India? Can they walk right into the stores?
    Cows can do anything they want. In Mumbai (Bombay) the sale of beef is prohibited.

  2. Is everyone in India a Vegetarian?
    Most Indians are vegetarians.

  3. How easy is it to meet girls in India?
    So far it's been pretty easy. There are some beautiful women in India.

  4. What's the best part about working where you are now?
    The frequent flyer miles. Haha. The experience of seeing another part of the world.

  5. What were the last 3 places you visited?
    Mumbai, Amsterdam & Vizag

  6. Do you get American TV or Radio on the Rig?
    We do have satellite tv on here, as well as internet access and the ability to call home anytime, for free.

  7. Who do you count as your heroes? Is Ghandi one of them? What about Dick Cheney?
    I have nothing for Dick Cheney. My hero was my father.

  8. Do you think you could outrun a cow (no, not your ex-wife)?
    I did outrun my ex-wife. Haha. But like I said, the cows rule here.

  9. Do any girls work on your Oil Rig?
    Not on this rig, but there are women working in the oilfield, Playboy material they are not!!

  10. When you aren't ruining nature's ecosystem, where do you call home?
    The great state of Arkansas.

  11. What do you miss most when you are on the rig?
    I miss my niece. Plus all the nice amenities of the United States.

  12. Ever seen a shark near your rig?
    All kinds, hammerheads, blues, maco's and sand sharks.

  13. What was the scariest time/event when you were at work?
    I almost fell off the rig while a hammerhead shark was below me.

  14. Can you swim?
    I hope so.

  15. Ever see any alien spaceships out there?
    All the time.

  16. Are you allowed to drink on the job?
    Not allowed, but has happened.

  17. Who is your favorite American Idol?
    Me.

  18. Have you ever met someone from India who wanted to be called Native American?
    Not yet

  19. Do you think Bill Murray should have won the Oscar?
    I think I should have one the oscar.

  20. If you could have one teacher from VHS on the Rig with you, who would it be, and why?
    That's a no brainer. Ms. Cheryl Belligio. Wahoooooooooo.
